Four years after her life-changing summer, Gigi Goldstein thinks saying goodbye to Camp Chinooka means saying hello to a brand new life. Now faced with a second chance at her career, she is filled with more hope than she’s felt in a long time. Her design house is taking the fashion world by storm, even attracting notice of Victoria Ellicott, the fashionable British socialite who just happens to be engaged to the future king of England. When Gigi is chosen to design the royal wedding dress in London, she is forced to confront her ex-fiancé, Perry Gillman, now a successful composer with a hit show on the West End.

But when Gigi learns Perry’s been dating Victoria’s sister, who rivals her in looks, style and sophistication, Gigi can’t help but feel inadequate in everything. Her world begins to crumble as she develops a creative block so debilitating, she fears that a wedding dress of royal proportions is never going to happen. Even a budding relationship with the handsome, wealthy, and rich Viscount of Satterley can’t make her forget about Perry and her inability to get over him. As the world gears up for the wedding of the century, Gigi is on the brink of buckling under the immense pressure of the uncertainties of her future and failures of her past.

Will she be able overcome her creative paralysis to design the dress of Victoria’s dreams, or will she break down now that she has even s’more to lose?

Review:

S’more to Lose by Beth Merlin is a fun story filled with hilarious romantic mishaps of Gigi, the herione. I think every career woman can relate to Gigi’s success story. Her life as a designer is a total dream come true and even designing the gown to the next royal wedding is just an icing on the cake.

But running into Perry Gillman, her ex-fiancé, may not have been part of the deal. Not only that, it was the very same guy who ghosted her! Since I haven’t read the first book of The Campfire Series, I can be very objective with the way things turned out between Gigi and Perry. I haven’t been that invested when it comes Perry’s character so I can totally say that what he did was a pretty shitty thing to do. And now that he’s an A-list star currently dating the sister of the royal bride, things may be a tad bit more complicated than what Gigi had actually expected.

I especially love how the author depicted the life of a modern woman in Gigi’s character. And while she may have been the top designer in the fashion world, it was really amazing to see how she manages to overcome her struggles may it be on love or on her career, or in the end, a bit of both.

Although I can honestly say that the men in Gigi’s life came at the right place and at the right time. For Perry or Gideon, both of them came along at the exact moment she needed them the most. And maybe that’s also part of the reason why she chose to be with Gideon in the end. She provided the safety and security that she needed at the exact time her life imploded on her.

And can I just say that I especially love the real-life parallelisms of the characters in the book. Gigi as a reality show contestant reminded me of Project Runway, Perry reminded me of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton musical, and the Ellicott sisters reminded me of Kate and Pippa Middleton for the Royal Wedding!
