SYNOPSIS

Lucia Marcello is the good girl—or she used to be. The youngest mafia principessa of her family, she’s not the one who falls for the man from the wrong side of the tracks, and she certainly shouldn’t have run across the country with him.

She’ll leave everything behind for him …

Renzo Zulla is the bad guy—society and life labeled him that way. The only person left to take care of his siblings, he couldn’t afford the distraction of falling in love with a rich girl far beyond his league, and he definitely shouldn’t have her riding shotgun as he runs for his life.

He doesn’t want her anywhere else …

Love keeps them together.
Fear keeps them running.
Chaos follows them everywhere they go.

How long can they keep moving before someone finally catches up?

The cost of love is always high.
Never harbor it blindly.

Note: Harbor is book two in a three-book trilogy following the same couple.

Review:

I never knew I could feel for characters so much than when I read Renzo + Lucia’s star-crossed romance. I ended up with literal tears in my eyes! And believe me when I say that this rarely happens to me when I read a book.

But see, when you get invested in Bethany-Kris’ characters, you will definitely feel all the feels. Their crazy love really tugged into my heart and after reading Harbor, you can’t really help but fall in love with Renzo and Lucia a little bit more.

Harbor picked up after Privilege ends. The more I see these characters, the more I realize that they really are meant to be. It was really them against the world. But what gutted me most was when Renzo never really gave up on Lucia. Even when everything was going wrong against him, he would never ever put her in harm’s way. It’s really Ride or Die with them.

If you’re looking for a modern-day couple that will get you so invested in romance, then Renzo and Lucia’s story is just right for you. Harbor has enough action, suspense, and drama to get you so invested in the story that you couldn’t put it down until the end.

I cannot wait to see the conclusion of their story in Contempt. This is definitely one of the best books of 2019!

I’m startled out of my thoughts when my brother jumps up and shouts a bunch of profane nonsense, hands flailing like he’s trying to swim on land, or approximate the chicken dance while on an LSD trip.

“You can’t do this! It’s absolute bullshit!” Armstrong yells.

I look around the table, trying to piece together what I missed.

“I’m sorry, Armstrong. I know this is a shock, but we feel it’s in the company’s best interest to put Lincoln at the helm during this transitional stage,” G-mom says firmly.

At the helm? I look to G-mom who’s busy not looking at me.

Armstrong jabs at finger at himself. “But I’m the one who’s put in all the time here! I deserve to run the company! Lincoln doesn’t know the first thing about Moorehead. All he knows how to do is dig wells and forage for food in the wilderness. How are those valuable assets here?” He turns his attention to our mother. “Did you know about this? How can you let this happen? Look at him. How can that be the face of our company? He looks like he crawled out of a gutter and mugged a twenty-year-old college kid on a bender. How is this better for our bottom line?”

My mother clasps her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry, Armstrong, but this decision wasn’t mine to make. I know this is hard for you, but your grandmother and fath—”

Armstrong stomps his foot, exactly as a toddler would. “The company is mine! Lincoln can’t have it!”

I raise a hand, half to quiet my brother and also to find out what the freaking deal is. “Whoa, let’s back this bus up. Can someone explain what’s going on?”

“You’ve been appointed as the CEO of Moorehead Media, according to the will,” Christophe—no R, because that would make it far too pedestrian a name—my father’s lawyer says.

I’m working on trying to remain calm as I address my grandmother. “You didn’t say anything about me being CEO. You said you needed my help.”

“Running the company, yes,” she says through a practiced, stiff smile.

It’s her warning face, but seriously, when she said she needed my help for a few months I figured it meant I’d be keeping Armstrong in line while she sorted out who was going to take over the company, which I realize now was a stupid assumption.

“I didn’t think that meant CEO. How am I going to run a company with this dickhead on staff?” I motion to my brother.

“The name calling is unnecessary,” G-mom replies.

“Lincoln’s not even part of this family! He hasn’t attended one event in the past five years except for Dad’s funeral. He didn’t bother coming to my wedding and now he’s going to run the company? How is that fair?”

I snort. “Your wedding was an expensive joke.”

He crosses his arms over his chest. “I was set up. Amalie had cold feet and made me out to look like the bad guy.”

The woman beside him shoots him disgusted look.

Armstrong clears his throat and tugs at his collar. “My wedding is not the real issue. The point is that you’ve never involved yourself in any part of this family and now you think you can come in and take over. I will not stand by and let this happen!” He keeps jabbing his finger at me, as if he’s engaged in a finger sword fight.

I lean back in my chair and lace my fingers behind my neck. Armstrong has always been reactive. And self-absorbed. For a while it seemed like he finally had it together—back when he was engaged. But ever since that fiasco of a wedding he seems to have come completely unglued. Again. But worse this time. “Someone needs a timeout.”

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

Excerpt
“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

“Answer me,” I hissed.

“My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly.

“The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

“I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.”

Un-freaking-believable.

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness.

“Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.”

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

“Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk.

“Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth.

“Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.”

“Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

“Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

“Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?”

“Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

“And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”

“That’s your backbone?”

“When I have an ambition, I go for it.”

A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

Review:

The Kiss Thief is a contemporary romance that pays perfect homage to the story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I loved the classic feel of the story with its masquerades, ball gowns, and galas.

Francesca Rossi was such an endearing character who struggled to find her rightful place in the machinations of her mob family. When Wolfe Keaton bulldozed his way into her life, her idyllic life was suddenly turned upside down. Her heart belonged to another but instead, she was forced to marry a stranger.

I loved how these two fought to find their way back to each other. It just goes to show how you really can’t fight who you fall in love with. With so much angst that seeped through Wolfe’s soul, it was Francesca’s guileless innocence that saved him. She proved that love can be made into an equal give and take. That no matter how the odds are stacked against them, they could still have the winning hand as long as they have each other.

I am amazed at how LJ Shen was able to build the characters from this book. They were so vividly real to me that I instantly devoured it the moment I had my copy. And I must say that Wolde is already one of my favorite LJ Shen anti-heroes, right next to Vicious of course.

Review:

Privilege was an absolute treat to read! I had high expectations for this book because I’ve seen snippets of these characters over the past few years in some of Bethany-Kris’ other works. But I must say that it exceeded my expectations far beyond what I actually thought it could be.

Delving into this book to kick off this year’s romance binge is a great way to start 2019! I really enjoyed the vivid depiction of the contrast between Renzo’s life and Lucia’s privileged upbringing.

I loved how Bethany-Kris portrayed Lucia’s suffocating struggle as the baby of the Marcello clan and Renzo’s struggles to support his family. Two characters who seemed like polar opposites are brought together by fate and love. These two are slowly becoming one of my favorite canon couples in the Marcello universe, right next to Cross + Catherine of course.

I absolutely can’t wait to read what’s the next chapter of their story!

EXCLUSIVE RELEASE EXCERPT:

“What are we doing here?” Lucia asked.

“Just keep quiet,” John replied. “I’ve got some business to handle. I knew that you were wanting to chat and see me, or whatever, but I still have work to do all the same. Turn cheek like Dad always told you to do, and we’ll be fine.”

Lucia chose not to respond to her brother on that front. “Working, working?”

“I don’t have any other job, Lucy. I’m a Capo, and nothing more.”

Great.

John parked the Mercedes in front of a shoddy apartment building. He repeated to her to stay put and leave the car locked until he came back. Then, he climbed out of the car, and Lucia watched him disappear into the building. Less than ten minutes later, her brother emerged from the building with a black duffle bag in hand. John unlocked the car and tossed the bag to the back.

Once he was settled back into the driver’s seat, he said, “Just ask.”

Lucia peered into the back seat. “What is in that bag?”

“A couple of things.”

“Like what?”

“Money and substance.”

“Um …”

“Coke,” her brother clarified. “I need to pick up some stuff and hand it off to the people who run with it. Do you understand?”

“Not really.”

John shook his head. “Then stop asking.”

Lucia could do that.

“I have a couple of more pickups to do before I can take you back. Is that okay?”

“Perfect, John.”

Her brother pulled out of the parking space. “Good.”

For the next hour, Lucia sat quietly in the car while her brother did whatever it was he did. He often disappeared in and out of buildings with his black bag in hand, and no one ever passed him a second look. Apparently three years in prison really wasn’t affecting her brother’s ability to do his job.

Sticking a spoonful of a hot fudge sundae in her mouth as John drove through what looked to be a park of some sorts, Lucia noticed a group of older kids hanging around a convenience store. Well, she didn’t think they were kids, but they were probably around her age or a little older.

John parked his car and beeped the horn once. He flashed his lights twice. Confused, Lucia watched as an older boy broke away from the group and approached John’s car. Since the sky was starting to darken, she really couldn’t see the guy’s face all that well. But the closer he came to John’s window, Lucia had a far better view of him.

Sharp, strong lines shaped the man’s face. Wild black hair, like he’d been tugging on the ends, hung down to his eyes. Dark russet eyes peered into John’s opened window, finding Lucia instantly, while the guy’s lips pulled into a cocky smirk.

Lucia glanced away.

“Hey, Ren,” John greeted.

Ren.

Lucia took the guy’s name in, and chanced another look at him. He wasn’t looking at her anymore, but instead, focusing on John.

“Skip,” Ren said.

“You got anything for me today?”

“Always, boss.”

Ren’s hand disappeared inside his coat before he pulled out a white envelope. It passed into John’s hand like nothing was amiss. John opened it up, counted the cash that was inside quickly, and then handed over a stack to the man. Then, Lucia’s brother tossed the envelope onto the backseat.

“Go see, Tucker,” John said. “He’ll get you set up for next week for whatever you need.”

“Will do, Skip.”

Ren’s hand hit the top of the car, but before he turned away, he shot Lucia another look. Lucia fidgeted in her seat as her brother took notice of the stare that was passing between the two.

“Ren,” John snapped.

Clearly, her brother was not playing around today. He’d never been one for boys being around Lucia, anyway.

“Sorry, Skip,” Ren said. “I’m going. Next week?”

“Yeah. Get gone, kid.”

John was backing up before Ren had even moved away.

Once they were back on the road, Lucia’s curiosity ate away at her.

“John?”

“What?” her brother asked.

“Who was that?”

“Renzo?”

Lucia would recognize an Italian name anywhere.

“Yeah, him,” she said.

“A street kid,” John informed like it was nothing. “A soldier who probably isn’t going anywhere but right where he is. It sucks, but that’s how it goes.”

Lucia picked at her manicured nails, still curious. “Why?”

“Because that’s what his father did for our father, and his grandfather for our grandfather. It’s a circle, Lucia. It’s vicious. It’s the kind of life they can’t get out of even though they try damned hard. What does it matter?”

She didn’t really know.

“Just wondering,” Lucia settled on saying.

John’s gaze cut in her direction before he said, “Keep wondering. Nothing more.”

“Huh?”

“Stay away from guys like Renzo, Lucia.”

“I didn’t even say—”

“Take it as future advice,” John interrupted. “Remember it.”

She would try.

Review:

Vow is the stunning conclusion Andino and Haven’s story. And I must say that it is beyond what I have ever expected and a whole lot more!

As a huge fan of Bethany-Kris’ works, I have naturally been so invested with the characters from the Legacy series. But what’s so great about her books is that her plot will never fail to surprise you at every turn.

Andino and Haven hit a few bumps in the road before they got their happily ever after but I was rooting for them all this time. So it was such a sweet conclusion to a story that I have grown to love ever since I’ve been introduced to this couple.

The push and pull between these two characters all throughout the book is so raw and gripping that there will come a time that you are torn between the two of them. In the end, what I especially love most about the book is that Andino has finally found the right balance between fulfilling his duty as the Marcello boss and his own happiness.

I do think that Andino is one of the most compelling characters that Bethany-Kris has ever written. You will be at awe at his ruthless personality but at the same time, that will just make you love him more.

His father gave him a look, and then Michel. “What are you—”

“It’s not important right now.”

And it wasn’t.

His plans would have to wait. Because he did have plans, and while he understood his uncle’s position regarding the Calabrese, and that protecting their family from more violence was what would be in their best interests … he also agreed with his father more.

Andino would never bow to the fucking Calabrese.

Not after what they did to John.

Now this, too?

No way.

Once his cousin had gotten Andino all stitched up, and he walked his father and Michel to the door, all he wanted to do was relax for the evening. Michel pulled a small baggie from his inner pocket, and handed it over. Inside were pills. Michel only shrugged when Andino gave him an inquisitive look.

“No driving when you take one. Vicodin. For pain. Don’t be a fucking hero.”

Andino laughed. “Can I take it with whiskey?”

Michel glanced over at Gio as if to say, What the fuck do I do with him, huh?

“I can’t say yes to that,” Michel settled on saying.

“But you didn’t say no, either.”

“Because what is the point?”

His cousin’s and father’s laughter followed them out of the house. Andino was quick to lock the door behind them, and go back to the kitchen. Snaps was still in his spot in front of his food bowls, and his dark eyes watched Andino as he moved around the space to get a shot of whiskey ready before he pulled one of those pills out.

He wasn’t one for meds. He could handle pain. But his agitation level was already so high that he figured, what the hell? Something to take the edge off for the night would be perfect.

He’d just popped the pill, and swallowed a shot of burning whiskey when a knock echoed through his quiet house. Snaps still hadn’t moved from his spot; the dog always alerted with a loud bark to the fact someone was approaching his house, and right then he kept staring at Andino.

Except … his tail was wagging.

Andino should have known then.

The dog only chose to not alert when it was her.

He didn’t waste time as he practically ran from the kitchen back to the front of the house. He didn’t even move the shades to look out the window before pulling the door open.

And there she stood.

Skinny jeans molded to shapely, long legs.

Hair thrown up in a messy bun.

A black trench coat.

Blue eyes on him.

Like the storm or the sea.

Fire and ice, he thought.

“Haven,” Andino murmured.

Behind her waiting at the end of the walkway, he could see the enforcer that had been posted at his house. Still fucking standing there. A precaution, his father said. No doubt, given the man was looking right at them, the fact she was there would somehow get back to his family.

Andino didn’t care.

She was there. She shouldn’t be, but she was.

More than anything, he wanted that. He also knew he should let this woman go. Turn her away, and get her the hell away from him as fast as fucking possible. He’d finally gotten her away from the mess that was him and his life, and she should stay gone. It would be better for her in the end.

He shouldn’t invite her in.

He shouldn’t keep hurting her.

“Do you want to come in?” he asked.

Review:

I’ve always enjoyed K. Webster’s taboo treats and this one is no exception. I also don’t normally read a lot of M/M romance but since it’s K. Webster, I really wanted to give it a try. And it totally did not disappoint!

Dane Alexander is a man on a crossroads. After years of being unhappy, he finally does something to move on with his life. Then he met Nick Stratton. I loved the easy yet sizzling chemistry between the two of them. Dane and Nich were two likable characters that made it so easy to be invested in their story.

I also liked simple and straightforward plotline of the story and how these two characters were just meant for each other. Plus, the mention of the other characters from her taboo world was such a treat!
