A Legacy Novel

She was once his liar.

He was once her savior.

Cross Donati fills his days with the mafia, family, and responsibility. The wild boy is a distant memory. A waiting prince now sits in his place. An old debt puts the gunrunner right back into the path of his past, but he only sees his future.

Every king needs a queen.

Catherine Marcello learned how to stand on her own, and she no longer needs saving. The sly girl is far more dangerous now. A broken promise taught her how to live again. One conversation puts the hustler face to face with her first love, but she only sees heartache.

Every God needs a prayer.

The scars of their history runs deep. Every lie told, and each secret spilled hurts a little bit more.

Love does not care.

Love will not wait.

So, why does life keep standing in the way?

Revere is A Legacy Novel. While it can be read as a follow up to Always, it can also be read as a standalone novel.

A Legacy Novel

A wild boy.

A sly girl.

Cross Donati defines trouble. He does what he wants because he’s never known anything different. He’s unapologetic, and he owns it.

Catherine Marcello is every bit a good girl … on the outside. Her entire world is a legacy, and she lives it. She’s curious, and she’s exploring it.

She chases bad things.

He never learned to be good.

They’re late nights, stolen cars, first times, fist fights, leather jackets, beaches, bloody smiles, and life.

They’re vicious and precious, dangerous and harmless, innocence and sin. They are love.

Love is killing for someone.

Love is living for someone.

Sometimes, you can’t keep saving your heart when it means sacrificing it, too.

Sometimes, you have to learn to save yourself.

Sometimes, love has to fall, crash, and burn.

This is what love is like when you’re a principe and principessa della mafia.

This is what love is like when you’re Cross Donati and Catherine Marcello.

Always is a Legacy Novel, and while it is standalone, it can also act as a prequel for Revere. Each Legacy Novel stands alone from any other book, series, or collection.

The continuation of Cross and Catherine’s story in Revere has set a nostalgic atmosphere between the two characters. Even after seven years of separation, their love still remained constant that it almost feels like it was just yesterday. This kind of reminiscent tone throughout the whole book has left me feeling even more invested in the story that I literally couldn’t put the book down the moment I finally got my copy!

I love how Bethany-Kris perfectly showed how Cross and Catherine have matured and became comfortable in their own skin. For Cross, he finally learned how to control his hot-headed temper to better prepare him for inheriting the boss’ seat of the Donati family. But what’s more remarkable was Catherine’s transformation. She has finally found her place in the world of organized crime and she was not apologetic for it, since she is still a Marcello after all.

I am absolutely thrilled about the way Bethany-Kris told their love story and how they grew into their own person. Following The Legacy Series is like watching your nieces and nephews grow up before your eyes. And seeing your favorite characters get the happily ever after they deserve is really the best thing about reading a romance novel.

Cross’ marriage proposal was probably one of the sweetest things I’ve read in all of romance novel history. It was a perfect nod to their entire romantic love story and their promise of Always. The memories that they shared growing up is something that they both cherished and after all that’s happened between them, they also used those shared memories to find a way back to each other. As cliche as it sounds, for Cross and Catherine, first love really never dies.

Unruly can’t come soon enough. I am so excited to see the life that these two built together. The principe and principessa all grown up and ruling their own kingdom. Need I say more?

Oh, the trials of first loves and finding your way back to it.

This book has kept me on edge with the “will they or won’t they” dynamic of Tony and Amy. Some might find it tedious that these two are always going on opposite directions and resisting how they feel about one another. But as the story unravels, there’s actually more to what I thought was just puppy love all throughout their teenage years. What they had was real and that’s why they’ll always find their way back to each other.

I love how Tony’s free spirit surfer personality complements that of Amy’s resilient and driven self. It’s amazing that even after seven years, they are still in each other’s lives. First loves are hard to forget for sure but having that constant person for most of your life is another thing altogether. Even though their careers have pushed them towards opposite directions, it’s reassuring that their summer holidays still remain as the one strong factor that bounds them to reconnect.

So I guess readers like me would probably exclaim, “Finally!” when Tony and Amy finally got back together for the last time. It took a lot of growing up for the both of them until they realized that they do belong together, even after all these years. It was so heartbreaking to find out Amy’a miscarriage that ended their relationship all those years ago. To be able to bounce back to that and then risk her heart to fall in love with Tony again and give themselves another chance is what makes this book one hell of a good read.

On a side note, I really enjoyed the dynamics of friendship that Amy has built with her girl squad. Their naughty antics are just too hilarious to read! Kudos to the author for creating a storyline that builds on a friendship of women who support each other. And can I just say that it was absolutely sneaky of Amy to hide her relationship with Tony to her friends all those years ago. I don’t know how she pulled that off!

#CoffeehouseReads: Chasers of the Light by Tyler Knott Gregson

I don’t normally buy a lot of poetry books and when I do it’s usually a collection of poems that I’ve read before and I want a physical copy of. But a few month ago, I stumbled upon this one by chance while I was a bit early for my date with my boyfriend. So I went to a bookstore to pass the time while waiting for my date and picked it up.

I was instantly mesmerized by the words of the first few pages and after a few minutes, I was hooked and I can’t put it down.  Despite wanting it so badly and just go full on “take my money” mode, I decided not to buy it yet. For one, this book was way too expensive from my usual finds. I usually look at secondhand bookstores to add books for my bookshelf and it’s always usually something that I’ve read before and I want my own copy of. But this one is brand new, hardbound, and way over my budget. So I did what any rational millennial would do, I decided to sleep on it.

A week later, when I still couldn’t get the book out of my mind I decided to give in and buy it. And I have no regrets because this is one of the best splurges I had when it comes to books.

The verses of this collection really moved me. Words that were written in a typewriter almost felt like an art form that’s waiting to be discovered. Different pieces of paper, receipts, photos, and even pages from a book, added a more colorful story to the poems written on it.

I usually read the book while I’m commuting to the city for my grad school classes and every page I turn left me feeling inspired. I felt like there’s so much wonder and beauty left to be seen in our lives. It’s actually a very relaxing book to read when you’re stuck sitting somewhere around the corner of a coffeeshop to pass the time.

After reading the entire thing, sometimes I still bring the book to school with me. I open up random pages from the book and read it while I’m on the road. I was enthralled with his work because his poems resonate even to people who don’t normally read poetry. Writing something in a typwriter seems very brave and raw, without a chance to edit, the words felt vulnerable and beautiful. The author’s spur-of-the-moment thoughts were immortalized in lovely pieces of typewritten poems. It’s ingeniously crafty and creative. As someone who writes for a living but struggles to put their own creative thoughts in a piece of paper, this wonderful collection of poetry seems like a good place to thaw out those creative juices and be inspired.
